Alexis MacAllister and Luiz Diaz put in an impressive shift on Sunday as Liverpool beat Brentford 2-0 at Anfield.
The last of this weekend’s Super Sunday Premier League fixtures saw Arne Slot lead his charges to a satisfactory win on his first competitive home match.
Goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah in each half were enough to see the Reds continue their perfect start to the new campaign.
The Colombian finished a trademark counterattack by Liverpool midway through the first half.
The Reds turned Brentford’s corner kick into attack after Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota combined before the no.20 laid a well-timed pass for Diaz to race through on goal to put his side ahead.
Mohamed Salah made sure there was no coming back for the visitors when he doubled Liverpool’s lead.
Dominik Szoboszlai won possession halfway in Brentford’s half, and found Luis Diaz with a quick pass before the no.7 spotted Salah’s run to assist him with what was his 128 goal contributuion in 128 matches at Anfield.
A feat that moved him outright fifth in Liverpool’s all time goalscorers.
Speaking to Sky Sports PL after the match, a satisfied MacAllister said “We’re very glad, I think we played a fantastic game.
“The team gave everything you could see from the first minute that we played a very good game in possession and without the ball as well. So I am really pleased and also for this guy [Luis Diaz].
Luis Diaz came away with the man of the match award after his excellent performance on the afternoon, scoring and assisting as well as having two other shots on target.
“He also responded to questions about his goal.
“I am very happy. I know that as a striker/winger I need to score and assist, because that’s important.
“So I am happy that today was the first one [his first goal of the season] in a nice counterattack, something that we knew we have to do so I’m glad I was able to help my teammates with my performance”, Diaz said.
Liverpool controlled the match in every aspect, especially keeping possession very well and dictating the tempo through Rya Gravenberch, Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai in midfield.
Virgil Van Dijk and Ibrahama Konate led the defensive unit to another cleansheet, winning almost every aerial duels.
Trent Alexander-Arnold again was intrumental in how well Arne Slot’s side played before being substituted after 78 minutes for Conor Bradley.
Alexis MacAllister was adamant the team still has a lot to learn in response to Sky Sports reporter’s question about how well the tea is playing even though it is early days in Slot’s era.
“We know that there is still room for improvement.
“We know that we’re in transition because we sometimes should be patient [in decision making], but instead we’re quite direct I should say.
“But we’re in that phase of transition and everyone in the team is happy and working very hard to get Arne’s [Slot] idea.”
“Yeah, really important we know, that against Man United is a derby and a really important game for club and for us, so we will prepare during the week and do our best to win the game,” he finished with what the preparations would be for them ahead of their trip to Old Trafford to face their biggest rivals.
