France forward Antoine Griezmann has officially announced his retirement from international football at the age of 33.
The Atlético Madrid star earned 137 caps for his country, playing a pivotal role in France’s 2018 World Cup triumph.
Griezmann’s last start for the national team came during a 3-1 defeat against Italy in the UEFA Nations League in September.
His final appearance followed three days later when he came on as a substitute in a 2-0 victory over Belgium.
“Today, it is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from the French national team,” Antoine Griezmann said in an online video.
“After 10 incredible years marked by challenges, successes and unforgettable moments, it is time for me to turn the page and make way for the new generation.
“Wearing this jersey was an honour and a privilege.
“Since March 2014 and until last September, I had the opportunity to experience incredible moments alongside exceptional teammates.
“We shared victories that will remain forever engraved in our memories.”
Antoine Griezmann had a breakout tournament when France hosted Euro 2016.
Playing as a striker, he won the Golden Boot after netting six goals.
However, the tournament ended in heartbreak as France fell to Portugal in the final, losing 1-0 after extra time.
Despite the disappointment, France rebounded two years later, claiming the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Griezmann played a pivotal role in this success, featuring in every match of the tournament.
He delivered his best performances in the knockout stages, contributing either a goal or an assist in each game.
In the final, he scored from the penalty spot and set up two more goals as France defeated Croatia 4-2 to lift the trophy.
In subsequent tournaments, Griezmann adapted to a deeper midfield role, allowing Kylian Mbappé to take center stage in attack.
His performances at the 2022 World Cup were once again crucial, helping France reach back-to-back finals.
Unfortunately, France fell short, losing to Lionel Messi’s Argentina in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Over his decade-long international career, Griezmann has cemented his place in French football history.
He is fourth on the men’s all-time scoring list, while only Hugo Lloris and Lilian Thuram have made more appearances for the national team.
