Mykhailo Mudryk’s time in English football has been challenging, and now his Chelsea future appears to be in doubt, with reports suggesting the club is ready to offload him in the upcoming January transfer window.
Initially seen as a major statement signing when he arrived at Stamford Bridge in the winter of 2023, Mudryk’s career trajectory hasn’t lived up to the early expectations.
The Ukrainian winger was on the verge of joining Arsenal before Chelsea hijacked the deal, paying a record fee for a Ukrainian player.
Mudryk signed an eight-and-a-half-year contract, with an initial transfer fee of €70 million (£62m), potentially rising to €100m (£89m) with add-ons.
Despite the hefty investment, the 23-year-old has struggled to adapt to English football.
Since his arrival, Mudryk has managed just five league goals in 48 appearances, spanning three seasons and four different managers.
Concerns about his readiness for top-tier football were raised even before his move to London, as Mudryk had made only 65 senior club appearances as a professional.
While some believed he would need time to adapt, consistent playing minutes have been hard to come by during his Chelsea stint.
Now, interest is mounting from abroad.
Bayern Munich and Marseille are reportedly monitoring the situation closely, according to the Spanish outlet Fichajes.
Arsenal, the club Mudryk initially seemed destined for, also continues to be linked with the winger.
There were even reports that Mudryk was emotional after signing for Chelsea instead of the Gunners, fueling speculation of a potential reunion.
Mikel Arteta’s side may still be interested in bringing Mudryk to the Emirates, although their interest might not be as strong as before, especially given that they already took Raheem Sterling on loan from Chelsea.
As the January window approaches, it remains to be seen whether Mudryk will continue to fight for his place at Chelsea or seek a fresh start elsewhere.
