John Terry reflects upon Chelsea’s rock-solid defence during 2004/05 season under Jose Mourinho

John Terry is adamant that Chelsea’s remarkable defensive record from their 2004/05 Premier League campaign will stand the test of time, despite believing it could have been even better.

That season, Chelsea stormed to the title, finishing 12 points clear of Arsenal and suffering just one defeat in 38 matches.

The cornerstone of their success was a rock-solid defence, meticulously assembled by Jose Mourinho in his debut season after arriving from Porto.

It was a campaign that delivered Chelsea’s first Premier League title.

Terry was pivotal at the heart of the defence, forming a formidable partnership with Ricardo Carvalho.

They were protected by Petr Cech in goal, with William Gallas and Paulo Ferreira operating as full-backs, and Claude Makelele anchoring the midfield.

This defensive unit, supplemented by key contributions from Robert Huth, Wayne Bridge, and Glen Johnson, conceded just 15 goals over the entire season – a feat that Terry believes will never be surpassed.

Sharing a list of the 15 players who managed to breach their defence that year on Instagram, the former England captain expressed his pride in the achievement.

“I recently got sent this list of the 15 goals we conceded in 2004/05,” John Terry wrote.

“I can’t help but be annoyed but also very proud to be part of a great team.

“Going over the games and goals in my head thinking this should be 10 or less.

“Records are there to be broken, but I’m not sure 15 goals conceded in the Premier League will ever be beaten.”

Cech responded to Terry’s post by noting that he did not play in the final two games of that campaign.

John Terry replied: “Neither did I mate.

“I had an operation on my toe so I would be fit for pre-season.

“So me and you only conceded 13.”

In the 2004/05 season, Chelsea set another remarkable record, achieving 25 clean sheets in a single Premier League campaign.

The club holds several defensive records, largely due to Mourinho’s tactical influence.

Chelsea remained unbeaten at Stamford Bridge throughout that season, starting a historic home streak.

From February 21, 2004, to October 26, 2008, the Blues went an incredible 86 Premier League matches without losing at home.

This run contributed to Chelsea achieving the most unbeaten home seasons in Premier League history.

They remained undefeated at Stamford Bridge throughout the 2004/05, 2005/06, 2006/07, 2007/08, and 2014/15 campaigns.
