After being forced off due to injury during Argentina’s match on Thursday, further details regarding Alexis Mac Allister condition have emerged.
Liverpool, set to face Nottingham Forest in the Premier League in a week, may have to contend with Mac Allister’s potential absence.
The 25-year-old, who scored a brilliant opener for Argentina in their match against Chile, was substituted in the 79th minute after experiencing discomfort.
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni confirmed the issue, noting that Mac Allister had been struggling with discomfort.
Further clarification was provided by journalist Gaston Edul of TyC Sports, who reported that the injury was related to “adductor discomfort.”
The reporter added: “He will train differently until Tuesday to be able to get ready for the game against Colombia.”
Argentina will face off against Luis Diaz’s Colombia on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. (BST) as part of South America’s World Cup qualifying campaign.
Argentina currently sit at the top of the group with 18 points from seven matches, having recently secured a 3-0 win over Chile.
Close behind Argentina are Darwin Nunez’s Uruguay, four points adrift, while Colombia follows just one point further back after drawing 1-1 with Peru on Friday night.
Brazil round out the top four.
Alisson Becker played the full 90 minutes in Brazil’s 1-0 victory over Ecuador, courtesy of a goal by Real Madrid’s Rodrygo, who was set up by Lucas Paquetá.
Argentina will be hopeful that Alexis Mac Allister is fit to play against Colombia on Tuesday.
If he is cleared to participate, it could be a positive sign that he will also be available for Liverpool’s match on Saturday.
However, Liverpool would likely prefer that Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni rests Alexis Mac Allister entirely, rather than risking him in a quick return to action.
The Reds have valid concerns over the 25-year-old’s workload, given the significant amount of football he’s played over the past year.
Mac Allister already missed training leading up to the Chile game due to load management, and this remains a potential issue for both his club and his country.
During his debut season at Anfield, only Virgil van Dijk and Luis Diaz played more minutes than Mac Allister.
The Argentine midfielder also featured heavily for his national team over the summer, playing six matches – two of which went into extra time.
Mac Allister’s summer commitments didn’t end until July 14, following Argentina’s Copa America triumph.
When he finally returned to Liverpool training, he had just two weeks to prepare for the Reds’ Premier League opener against Ipswich.
