Liverpool are reportedly interested in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, but a move this summer appears unlikely due to the hefty £70 million price tag set by the Eagles.
Crystal Palace have been engaged in negotiations with Newcastle United over a potential transfer for the England international.
However, no agreement has been reached with only days left in the transfer window.
Newcastle have had multiple bids rejected for the former Chelsea player, and Guehi was in the starting lineup for Palace’s recent Carabao Cup victory over Norwich City.
Despite Newcastle’s interest, Palace have remained firm on their valuation, having already sold central defender Joachim Andersen to Fulham earlier this month for £30 million.
Palace are now close to signing French defender Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg after agreeing on a fee.
While there is still a possibility that Guehi could leave Palace before the transfer window closes, Newcastle’s chances of securing his signature may have been complicated by an injury to Chadi Riad in the match against Norwich, leaving Palace short of central defensive options.
According to The Independent, Liverpool could consider making a move for Guehi if he remains with Palace after the transfer deadline.
The 24-year-old has less than two years remaining on his current contract.
Liverpool, under the guidance of new manager Arne Slot, lost Joel Matip at the end of his contract earlier this year but still have defensive options in Jarell Quansah, Ibrahima Konaté, Joe Gomez, and Virgil van Dijk.
However, Van Dijk is already in the final year of his contract.
The Dutchman has remained composed regarding his future at Liverpool, but his reserved stance does little to reassure fans that he is close to extending his stay at Anfield.
Van Dijk has started his first season under a new manager following Jurgen Klopp’s departure and currently appears content with his situation.
“The thing is, I want to play the best season I can again,” said the Liverpool captain.
“I want to be important and stay important for the club this year.
“And whatever happens next year, we’ll see.
“Everything happens for a reason, that’s how I see it.
“And for now there have been no changes in my situation, but I’m very calm about it – and there’s no reason for me to start thinking about something else because I have a whole season to play for still.
“Hopefully it’ll be successful.”
