David Ornstein hints at Liverpool revisiting Martin Zubimendi transfer in January

Liverpool could reignite their interest in Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi when the January transfer window opens, according to David Ornstein.

The Athletic’s renowned journalist has hinted that the Reds might look to bolster their midfield by revisiting a move for the 25-year-old Spaniard.

Liverpool were linked with Zubimendi during the summer transfer window, but no deal materialized as they ultimately strengthened their squad with other options.

However, with Arne Slot’s side looking to maintain their competitive edge in both the Premier League and European competitions, a fresh attempt to sign Zubimendi could be on the cards.

Zubimendi, known for his composure on the ball and defensive prowess, would offer Liverpool an additional option in the holding midfield role, potentially providing cover and competition for players like Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch who has impressed in the no.6 role this season.

“They targeted Martin Zubimendi and got far in the deal, but ultimately he decided to stay at Real Sociedad,” he said on The Athletic FC podcast, as quoted by TBR Football.

“But no panic, don’t suddenly knee-jerk to an alternative that might not be quite right for you.

“Perhaps, go with your internal, existing options until the right opportunity arises.”

He added: “Maybe that will be Zubimendi in the future in the way that Virgil van Dijk was after they missed out on him when he was at Southampton one summer and then they signed him in January or maybe it’ll be someone else entirely, or nobody at all as Ryan Gravenberch takes to the role with aplomb.

“Let’s see.”

The Reds made just two first-team signings this season: goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili and winger Federico Chiesa.

However, their limited additions were not due to a lack of effort.

Zubimendi, who has three years remaining on his contract, was a key target.

Over his four years with Sociedad’s first team, he has contributed nine goals and seven assists in 192 appearances across all competitions.
