Manchester United have been offered the opportunity to sign Ben Chilwell from Chelsea in the summer transfer window, according to talkSPORT.
England international Chilwell has been informed that he is not part of new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca’s plans.
The left-back was omitted from the squad for the Premier League opener against Manchester City, along with several other players the club is actively looking to offload as part of efforts to reduce their bloated squad.
Maresca has cited that the 27-year-old does not align with his tactical approach, opting to start Marc Cucurella in the left-back position instead.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are dealing with a shortage of left-backs due to injuries to both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
This situation forced manager Erik ten Hag to deploy right-sided defender Diogo Dalot out of position in their 1-0 victory over Fulham.
Chilwell is reportedly assessing his options, with Chelsea’s board unlikely to block his exit if a suitable offer is made before the transfer window closes on August 30.
Chilwell was one of three notable absentees from Chelsea’s squad for their upcoming Europa Conference League fixture against Servette.
Maresca addressed the omissions of both Chilwell and Raheem Sterling during a press conference on Wednesday, stating: “They are training apart.
“The situation with both of them is quite clear.
“We have a big squad and it’s impossible to give all of them minutes.
“If they are looking for minutes it’s better for them to leave.
“I try to be honest. I spoke with Raheem before the Manchester City game.
“I said he will struggle to get minutes with us and this was the reason why he was out.
“And with Chilly, he’s lovely guy, but I said he is going to struggle with his position.
“It’s not brutal, it’s just honest.”
If Ben Chilwell moves to Old Trafford, he’ll be following in the footsteps of his former Chelsea teammate, Mason Mount.
Mount made the switch from Stamford Bridge to Manchester United last summer in a £55 million transfer deal.
Chilwell, who still has two years remaining on his Chelsea contract, joined the Blues from Leicester City in 2020 for £45 million.
Since then, he has made 106 appearances for the club and was a crucial part of the team that lifted the Champions League trophy in 2021.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, Chilwell has contributed four goals and 11 assists.
However, injuries have limited his game time over the past two seasons.
Despite participating in Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the United States this summer, Chilwell only clocked 64 minutes of play.
In a separate move, regular starter Conor Gallagher officially departed Chelsea on Wednesday, ending his long-standing transfer saga.
