Raheem Sterling ‘will not hand’ in transfer request to leave Chelsea

Raheem Sterling is not expected to submit a transfer request this summer, despite speculation about his future at Chelsea.

The winger was surprisingly left out of the Blues’ squad for their 2-0 defeat against Manchester City on Sunday.

The 29-year-old had been anticipated to feature in the club’s opening Premier League fixture at Stamford Bridge, particularly against his former club.

Sterling had been actively involved in Chelsea’s pre-season preparations and was thought to be in contention for a starting spot under new head coach, Enzo Maresca.

However, with five players already deemed surplus to requirements by Chelsea, there are growing concerns that the club may consider offloading the England international.

Sterling’s camp has reportedly sought clarity from the club regarding his role moving forward.

Like teammates Conor Gallagher, Ben Chilwell, Trevoh Chalobah, Armando Broja, and Romelu Lukaku, Sterling was overlooked by Maresca for the season opener.

A spokesperson for Sterling said: “Raheem Sterling is contracted to Chelsea Football Club for the next three years.

“He returned to England two weeks early to conduct individual training, and has had a positive pre-season under the new coach, who he has developed a good working relationship with.

“He is committed, as ever, to delivering at the highest level for Chelsea FC and the fans, who he holds in high regard.

“And given his inclusion in official club pre-match material this week, our expectation was that Raheem would be involved in this weekend’s fixture in some capacity.

“As a camp, we have always had positive dialogue with, and assurance from, Chelsea FC in relation to Raheem’s future at the Club, so we look forward to gaining clarity on the situation.

“Until then, we will continue to support Raheem’s desire to start the new season positively.”

Raheem Sterling has been with Chelsea for the past two years, following his £47.5 million transfer from Manchester City.

During this period, he has contributed 19 goals and 12 assists in 81 appearances across all competitions.
