How VAR error cost Liverpool fourth goal against Manchester United

Liverpool thrashed Manchester United 3-0 in the Premier League on Sunday

Liverpool may have been denied a fourth goal in their dominant 3-0 victory over Manchester United due to a potential VAR error.

The Reds secured a convincing win at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday, with goals from Luis Díaz and Mohamed Salah.

Diaz opened the scoring with a first-half brace, while Salah added a third to seal the victory.

However, an early effort from Trent Alexander-Arnold, which could have given Liverpool the lead, was disallowed for offside.

Later in the match, Dominik Szoboszlai and Salah both came close to extending the Reds’ lead further.

In the closing stages of the game, Liverpool appealed for a penalty after Cody Gakpo appeared to be fouled by Noussair Mazraoui on the edge of the penalty area.

Referee Anthony Taylor decided to play the advantage, believing the foul occurred outside the box.

Despite this, former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor took to social media to question why VAR did not intervene, as replays suggested the foul might have been inside the penalty area.

After Taylor allowed play to continue, Darwin Núñez eventually won possession but fired a shot wide, leading to a goal kick that ended Liverpool’s attacking opportunity.

Mellor argued that VAR should have instructed Taylor to review the incident on the pitch-side monitor.

Had Taylor reviewed the footage and awarded a penalty, Liverpool could have had the chance to make it 4-0.

Despite this, the incident did not affect the final result. Liverpool maintained their clean sheet and secured a comfortable three-goal victory.

The Reds remain unbeaten in the Premier League and currently sit second in the table, trailing only Manchester City on goal difference
