Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag provides Tyrell Malacia injury update
Tyrell Malacia has been sidelined since May 2023 following two rounds of knee surgery
Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia is unlikely to be available for selection until October.
The 24-year-old left-back has been sidelined since May 2023, following two rounds of knee surgery.
He is currently continuing his rehabilitation at the club’s Carrington training complex.
Initially, United anticipated Malacia’s return in January, which led to the termination of Sergio Reguilon’s loan from Tottenham.
However, Malacia has experienced a setback in his recovery.
United manager Erik ten Hag stated that Malacia is “in a good place” but suggested it will take another two months before he is fully match-fit.
“He is now in a good place,” Ten Hag assured, “but he is not here because I only took players who could play games or be available for team training.
“He is not that far, but he is now in a progress situation.
“At a relatively short notice, he can again return into team training and then into team performance in games.
“I think it would be possible (for Malacia to return) in two months.”
Malacia was Erik ten Hag’s first signing at Manchester United, joining from Lyon for £14.6 million in July 2022.
He was named in all 62 matchday squads during the 2022-23 season.
However, the Netherlands international has not featured since starting against Croatia in the Nations League on June 14, 2023.
Last season, Ten Hag often had to manage without a specialist left-back, as Luke Shaw was available for only 14 of United’s 52 matches.
Shaw is expected to return to training next week following his involvement in England’s run to the European Championship final.
In pre-season, 17-year-old Harry Amass has started at left-back in both of United’s tour games against Arsenal and Real Betis in the United States.
Additionally, 19-year-old Sam Murray played in the matches against Rosenborg and Rangers last month.
