Tyler Morton has expressed his excitement about Arne Slot’s style of play at Liverpool and believes he is ready to compete for a first-team spot.
Morton has impressed with two notable cameos off the bench during Liverpool’s ongoing US tour, which has seen the Reds secure victories over Real Betis and Arsenal.
The 21-year-old, who spent the past two seasons on loan in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers and Hull City, is eager to break into the Liverpool senior squad for the upcoming campaign.
Morton feels that Slot’s tactical approach closely resembles the style famously associated with the Netherlands national team in the 1970s, where players were adept at playing multiple positions throughout a match.
“He loves Total Football,” said Morton.
“He’s come in and it’s a style a lot of players love.
“If you don’t love the style he plays, you shouldn’t be a footballer really!
“It’s Total Football and it’s every midfielder’s dream.
“You could see it (against Arsenal) in the triangles that were played; he’s big on triangles.
“I thought it was brilliant, I thought we dominated and against a very good Arsenal side.
“It was a great display.
“The style the gaffer is implementing is working.
“You can see it’s starting to click already and that’s a big compliment to the management team.
“I think it’s going to improve quickly and I think it was a very good step in a good direction.”
Morton added: “I love learning new styles.
“I loved going out on loan and learning different styles from different managers and picking up little things that I can take into my career.
“I’m definitely picking up things here. It’s a very tough pre-season, very intense, you’ve got to work hard for everything.
“I think that’s what we’re doing, that’s what I’m doing especially.
“I’ve definitely picked up stuff I can take on into the season.”
Liverpool will conclude their US tour with a match against Manchester United this weekend.
Following the tour, the remaining players from their international commitments will return to the AXA Training Centre to begin pre-season training next week.
They will then face Sevilla in their final friendly at Anfield on August 11.
The Reds will kick off their Premier League campaign against promoted Ipswich Town.
Morton, who played against Ipswich twice last season, is confident he is in peak condition to make his first Premier League appearance since December 2021.
“I’m definitely ready, I think we’ve been ready for a few weeks now because we came in so early,” said Morton.
“And I’m grateful for it because we’re all ready and we all look very fit.
“Everyone is working so hard in training; you’ve got to because the demands are so high, especially at this club.
“I’ve come back and I feel in the best shape I’ve been in, especially physically.
“I’ve just got to keep working hard, keep going and hopefully it’ll take me into a good place.”
