How Erik ten Hag reacted after Liverpool beat Manchester United
Liverpool thrashed Manchester United 3-0 in Columbia, South Carolina
Liverpool concluded their successful tour of the United States with a 3-0 victory over their Premier League rivals, Manchester United, in the early hours of Sunday morning UK time.
Fabio Carvalho continued his impressive form by scoring for the second consecutive match, with additional goals coming from Curtis Jones and Kostas Tsimikas.
This win capped off a perfect tour for the Reds, following previous triumphs over Arsenal (2-1) and Real Betis (1-0).
Liverpool secured a comfortable win in front of a crowd of 77,559 at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina.
Despite the overall dominance, there were moments when goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher’s contributions were crucial to the team’s clean sheet.
New Liverpool head coach Slot said afterwards: “We are very happy with the result.
“We scored some really nice goals but I don’t think we had enough control over the game because United were threatening us more than a few times.
“It’s a 3-0 win but the score could have been different tonight as well.”
He added: “Absolutely. A lot of new players come in – I think seven, eight or nine maybe.
“Not new but they come back from their holiday.
“So it’s interesting to see how these players fit into the team and implement them as soon as we can.
“We need to work hard in the upcoming two weeks to be ready for Ipswich because there are a lot of positives to take from today but also, like I just said, we gave away too many chances.”
Man United were punished for their lack of ruthlessness in front of goal.
The situation was exacerbated for boss Erik ten Hag, who faced a challenging night as Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof, Will Fish, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were all forced to leave the field due to injuries.
On the defeat and the tour overall, Ten Hag said: “There were mixed feelings, I would say.
“I think I have seen positive bits, but the way we concede goals, we are, of course, not happy with it.
“Of course, Liverpool are a very good side.
“They are very aggressive, and they have lots of goalscoring abilities, so they did very well. But the way we conceded, we are not happy with it.
“As I said, I think there were good bits, and the first goal is always very important.
“I thought Liverpool played very well, but they were also very efficient.
“The group and staff, everyone has done a great job. It’s always tough at the end of such a tour, but we are really pleased with all the effort they put in.
“We came together, we worked on our game model, and now we have to fly back and we have to recover, because it’s tough.
“Especially the last days, and then such a tough game at the end, but you learn a lot about your team.
“Now we have to recover, and then go to prepare the next game, and it is a big game.”
