PSG confirm signing of Liverpool and Manchester United transfer target
Benfica's Joao Neves have joined PSG on a five-year deal
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have announced the signing of Liverpool and Manchester United target Joao Neves.
The 19-year-old midfielder has joined the club on a five-year contract.
Neves began his football journey in 2012 in his hometown of Tavira, located in Portugal’s Algarve region.
He moved to Benfica in 2016, progressing through the club’s youth system before signing his first professional contract in December 2020.
Neves played a pivotal role in Benfica’s Youth League triumph in 2022.
On 30 December 2022, the talented midfielder made his first-team debut for Benfica in a league match against Braga.
Under coach Roger Schmidt, he contributed to the team’s Portuguese league title in 2023 and made his Champions League debut at just 18 years old in February 2023.
A technically gifted right-footed midfielder, Neves established himself as a first-team regular during the 2022-2023 season.
Known for his hard work and versatility, he scored his first professional goal against Lisbon rivals Sporting on 21 May 2023.
In the subsequent season, Neves helped Benfica secure victory over FC Porto in the Portuguese Supercup, solidifying his status as a key player for the club.
His impressive rise continued on the international stage, earning his first cap for Portugal against Bosnia in October 2023.
He has since made nine appearances for the Seleção, including two matches at Euro 2024, where Portugal reached the quarter-finals.
“I’m very proud to be joining Paris Saint-Germain, a very ambitious Club,” said João Neves.
“I’m going to give my all to help my team-mates, to grow at this fantastic Club and to win numerous titles.
“We are delighted to welcome João Neves to the Paris Saint-Germain family,” said PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaïfi.
“João is one of most talented players in Portugal and internationally.
“He was so passionate to join Paris Saint-Germain and determined to fight for the jersey – which is what we expect of all our players. We continue to build a fantastic young team at Paris Saint-Germain – based on teamwork, talent and collective spirit – which is the foundation of our Club’s great future.
