FA make last minute referee change ahead of Community Shield between Man City and Man Utd
Manchester City and Manchester United face off in the Community Shield on Saturday
The Football Association (FA) have been compelled to appoint a new referee for the Community Shield match between Manchester United and Manchester City.
Originally, John Brooks was slated to officiate the game at Wembley Stadium.
However, just three days before the fixture, Brooks sustained a minor injury, leading to his withdrawal from the match.
Jarred Gillett has been named as his replacement.
Gillett, who was initially assigned as the fourth official, has been promoted to referee, with Sam Barrott stepping in as the new fourth official.
Adrian Holmes and Nick Greenhalgh will serve as Gillett’s assistants.
Peter Bankes will oversee VAR operations from Stockley Park, supported by Sian Massey-Ellis and Tim Robinson.
The Community Shield, traditionally the curtain-raiser for the new season, will feature Premier League champions Manchester City against FA Cup winners Manchester United.
United will be without new signing Leny Yoro, who is sidelined for three months due to a foot injury.
Striker Rasmus Højlund and left-back Tyrell Malacia also remain unavailable, with Malacia being a long-term absentee.
In contrast, Manchester City appear to have a relatively clean bill of health.
However, Rodri may miss the game as he continues to enjoy an extended break following Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph.
Rodri has yet to return to action since the tournament.
This match marks the first competitive fixture for both sides since last season’s FA Cup final, where Manchester United triumphed 2-1.
Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo were on target for United, while Jeremy Doku netted a late goal for City.
The victory secured United’s qualification for the Europa League, capping off a challenging season that saw them record their worst-ever Premier League finish.
Reflecting on the win over Man City, United boss Erik ten Hag said at the time: “All compliments to the team.
“We played very good to our identity. Very strong.
“You have seen how we can play when we have the players on board.
“Some were not even match fit but the performance was very good.
“I tell you this all year – when the players are fit we can play good football.
“A very good performance against the best team in the world.
“With a local rivalry it’s there and it’s much more important when you play a team from your own city.
“But for us it wasn’t about this, it was to prove a point after so many setbacks.
“The team showed so much resilience and I’m proud of them.”
