UK Prime Minister, Kier Starmer together on behalf of the government has urged the nation’s sports institutions to call for a cease-fire in the far-right riots that have shocked the country – and put out statements encouraging community harmonization.
According to the Mail Sport, representatives from Downing Street directly requested chiefs from football, rugby, cricket, and beyond to end the violence in a Zoom call on Wednesday.
The Government and the sports clubs are aware of how these disruptions and mayhems happening across the country could disrupt sports games – and are eager to ensure fixtures go on as planned uninterrupted.
The EFL commences this weekend amid the civil troubles, however, clubs have been given assurances of matches going on despite the struggles the police forces are facing due to the actions of the far-right activists. There will be an unlikely postponement unless the situation of the police force is beyond control.
Mike Keegan wrote that, “The situation is being closely monitored and officials hope that pleas for calm from professional clubs to those who follow them will have an impact.”
The EFL supports the government’s call, although they are cautious about clubs not being involved in political matters of this nature. Nonetheless, several sporting clubs across sport are considering beefing up security at their venues for fixtures.
Top football cubs such as Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City who have large following in the country and world at large may need to play their part in peace-making to bring the far-right riots and troubles to an end.
People have lost their properties, homes, hotels and vehicles have been burnt down. The government themselves have not been spared as a number of state properties have been damaged as well.
Hundreds have been arrested during this havoc wrecking troubles, whiles calls have been made by several influential people in the country and beyond to see peace prevail in the UK.
