Chelsea defender Reece James has encountered a setback ahead of the new season due to a fresh hamstring injury, according to The Athletic.

James experienced discomfort during training at Cobham this week, following the team’s return from their pre-season tour of the USA.

The 24-year-old had been enjoying a successful summer, starting all five of Chelsea’s pre-season friendlies.

However, he has now been ruled out of their final warm-up match against Inter Milan at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

It is believed that the hamstring injury is minor.

The Blues will exercise caution with James’ recovery, as he is already suspended for the first three games of the season.

Malo Gusto, who had a strong 2023-24 campaign, is set to cover for him.

James received a second red card of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion in Chelsea’s penultimate match last term, resulting in an automatic four-game ban.

This suspension impacts his availability for Chelsea’s two-legged UEFA Conference League play-off against Braga or Servette later this month.

The first leg is scheduled for August 22, with the second leg on August 29.

Chelsea are targeting the match against Bournemouth on September 14, following the international break, as a potential return date for James.

There is concern over the recurrence of James’ hamstring issues, as he has a history of such injuries that have limited his game time.

Last season, he started only five Premier League games after undergoing surgery in December to address a problem in his left leg.
