Manchester United close to securing new contract for Bruno Fernandes
Bruno Fernandes is set to sign a new deal
Manchester United are optimistic about finalizing a new contract with club captain Bruno Fernandes in the coming weeks, according to BBC.
Fernandes, who signed his current deal in 2022, is contracted until 2026.
While there is a possibility that the club could announce the extension before the transfer window closes on August 30, the primary focus of United’s hierarchy remains on securing incoming transfers before the deadline.
Bruno Fernandes took over as captain from Harry Maguire in 2023, with manager Erik ten Hag continuing to place trust in the midfielder, despite criticism from former United captains Gary Neville and Roy Keane at times.
Although the 29-year-old was not listed among the ‘untouchables’ this summer – players United were not willing to entertain offers for – a sale was always contingent on receiving an extraordinary bid, which has yet to occur.
Before May’s FA Cup final, Fernandes hinted at uncertainty regarding his future at Old Trafford, stating that his personal ambitions needed to align with those of the club.
Fernandes played the full 90 minutes in Saturday’s Community Shield match, where United lost to Manchester City on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Meanwhile, United are close to completing the signings of central defender Matthijs de Ligt and full-back Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich.
With the anticipated arrivals of Leny Yoro from Lille and striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna, United’s summer spending would approach £140 million.
