Former Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero has predicted a prolific season in front of goal for Darwin Nunez at Liverpool.
As Liverpool embarks on their post-Jürgen Klopp era for the 2024/25 campaign, Nunez is expected to lead the attack.
New head coach Arne Slot has personally reached out to the Uruguayan international to reassure him of his importance to the team after a challenging season.
The 25-year-old striker has made a notable impact since his £85 million transfer from Benfica two summers ago, with 33 goals and 17 assists in 96 appearances.
Despite these impressive statistics, Nunez has experienced fluctuations in form, including high-profile missed chances and periods of reduced confidence.
While he boasts significant pace and athleticism, his finishing has sometimes been criticized for its inconsistency and lack of composure.
However, Sergio Aguero, one of the Premier League’s all-time great goal scorers, believes Nunez is on the verge of a purple patch.
“Credit where credit’s due – I do [see Darwin Nunez having a good season]. He’s a dangerous player that’s always prowling the goalposts,” he told Stake.com.
“Each season, he refines his game… and as long as he doesn’t let the anxiety of a dry spell get to him, Darwin will be a prolific goal scorer in due time.
“Darwin needs time to solidify, and sooner or later, he’ll get there.”
Nunez has returned to Liverpool after receiving additional time off to recover following the Copa América.
He scored two goals during the tournament, helping Uruguay secure a third-place finish.
Nunez also started Liverpool’s 0-0 draw against Las Palmas at Anfield on Sunday.
