Mikel Arteta has calmed concerns regarding Declan Rice’s fitness after the midfielder limped off during Arsenal’s victory over Wolves.
The England international exited the pitch in the 85th minute, clutching his calf as he was escorted by the Gunners’ medical team.
Arsenal were already leading 2-0 at the Emirates, courtesy of goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka, securing a strong start to their season.
As the match neared its conclusion, Rice went down on the turf, initially receiving assistance from Havertz, who helped stretch his leg.
Arsenal’s physios quickly entered the field to provide treatment, after which it was decided to substitute the 25-year-old.
Gabriel Jesus came on in his place.
Fortunately, there seems to be little cause for concern.
Arteta confirmed that Rice was only suffering from cramp, attributing it to the limited pre-season preparation the midfielder had received.
“Yeah he was cramping,” Arteta said.
“He hasn’t had the longest pre-season ever.
“But he was really trying and he put an unbelievable performance again.
“At the end he was struggling a bit.”
Arsenal’s boss has expressed his admiration for his players’ determination to return to action.
Despite a demanding summer at Euro 2024 in Germany, where Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and David Raya all competed until the final stages, they have had minimal rest.
The Spanish coach praised their commitment, emphasising how even during their holidays, they were preparing themselves for the upcoming season.
“I’m not surprised,” he said.
“That was their mentality straight away after the last game they said I’m gonna be ready for the first game.
“I spoke to them after the summer, and tried to arrange a plan.
“They wanted to come back and be here early.
“They were already getting prepared when they were on holidays.
“This is the mentality that we need. If players are doing that compromise it will grow around the team and they will step up the level.
“That’s what we need.”
Declan Rice is expected to recover in time for Arsenal’s first away match of the Premier League season, as they prepare to face former manager Unai Emery’s Aston Villa at Villa Park next Saturday.
Last season, the Gunners struggled against the Champions League qualifiers, suffering defeats both home and away.
Mikel Arteta will be eager to turn things around this season and improve Arsenal’s points tally with a better result against Villa.
