Raheem Sterling is seeking answers regarding his future at Chelsea after being left out of the squad for Sunday’s Premier League game against Manchester City.
The 29-year-old winger has been the subject of speculation in recent months, but he remained a key part of the Blues’ pre-season preparations during their tour of the United States.
However, competition for places has intensified following Chelsea’s recent acquisition of Pedro Neto, who was named on the bench on Sunday.
Additionally, Chelsea boast a wealth of attacking options, including Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer, and Nicolas Jackson, all of whom can operate on the wings.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Sterling contributed eight goals and four assists in 31 Premier League appearances last season.
A statement from Sterling’s camp read: “Raheem Sterling is contracted to Chelsea Football Club for the next three years.
“He returned to England two weeks early to conduct individual training, and has had a positive pre-season under the new coach, who he has developed a good working relationship with.
“He is committed, as ever, to delivering at the highest level for Chelsea FC and the fans, who he holds in high regard, and given his inclusion in official club pre-match material this week, our expectation was that Raheem would be involved in this weekend’s fixture in some capacity.
“As a camp, we have always had positive dialogue with, and assurance from, Chelsea FC in relation to Raheem’s future at the club, so we look forward to gaining clarity on the situation.
“Until then, we will continue to support Raheem’s desire to start the new season positively.”
On Raheem Sterling’s absence, Enzo Maresca said:: “It’s just a technical decision, nothing else to say.
“Managers are paid to make decisions and sometimes players don’t like it.”
Sterling wasn’t the only notable absentee from the group, as Ben Chilwell was also missing.
Earlier this week, Enzo Maresca indicated that it was best for the full-back to part ways with Stamford Bridge.
This could potentially involve Joao Felix returning to Chelsea in a swap deal.
The Portugal international, who spent time on loan at Chelsea in 2023, could provide additional competition for Sterling.
Defender Trevoh Chalobah has also been instructed to train separately from the first team as the club looks to facilitate his departure.
