Manchester United in talks over Serie A star as Manuel Ugarte alternative
Manchester United are interested in signing Serie A midfielder
Manchester United are exploring a potential move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson if they fail to secure Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte, according to reports.
The Red Devils have been active in the summer transfer window
They have already secured four major signings: striker Joshua Zirkzee, right-back Noussair Mazraoui, and centre-backs Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro.
Their focus has now shifted to bolstering their midfield.
For the past month, Manchester United have been pursuing Ugarte
However, PSG remain firm on their £51m valuation, refusing to make a loss after paying the same fee to acquire the Uruguayan from Sporting CP last year.
AS reports that United are now weighing up Ederson as an alternative.
But, they face competition, with Aston Villa reportedly interested in the Brazilian as they seek a natural replacement for Douglas Luiz.
Additionally, Liverpool are reportedly also admirers of Ederson.
Ugarte was omitted from Paris Saint-Germain’s matchday squad for their opening Ligue 1 game against Le Havre on Friday.
In his debut season with PSG, Ugarte appeared in 37 games across all competitions, helping the team secure the Ligue 1 title, Coupe de France, and French Super Cup.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag values Ugarte’s qualities and believes he fits well with the club’s new recruitment strategy, particularly given his age.
A key obstacle for United is that Atalanta value Ederson at the same £51m price PSG demand for Ugarte.
Furthermore, United have struggled to offload veteran Casemiro to create room for a new marquee midfielder, with the Brazilian international starting the season alongside youngster Kobbie Mainoo.
Ederson, who turned 25 last month, has earned two caps for Brazil and was part of their Copa America squad this summer.
He played a pivotal role in Atalanta’s run to Europa League glory last season and recently featured in their 2-0 loss to Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup.
