Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has disclosed that Rodrigo Bentancur is “conscious and communicating.

Bentancur suffered a severe head injury sustained during Monday evening’s 1-1 draw against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

The Uruguayan midfielder was involved in a heavy collision with Leicester’s Abdul Fatawu during a corner kick.

Medical staff were quickly called onto the pitch, and Bentancur received extensive treatment before being put on oxygen, as he appeared to be knocked out cold.

He was then stretchered off the field to a standing ovation from both sets of supporters.

Postecoglou provided a positive update after the match, confirming that Bentancur was awake and responsive.

Speaking at the King Power Stadium, the Australian manager said: “We’ve got to be very careful.

“The good news is he was up and talking.

“We’ll let the medical team take care of that.

“I don’t have a lot of information but I know he is up and he’s communicating so he’s fine from that point of view.

“But obviously a head injury and I’ll leave it in the hands of medical team now.

“The key thing is that he’s definitely conscious and communicating.

“Whenever it’s a head injury and you see a player go down, I think nowadays we’re always cautious in that moment and I don’t know the actual circumstances but I know it was a head collision.”

Following his injury, Rodrigo Bentancur received an outpouring of supportive messages.

His club, Spurs, shared their own message of encouragement on social media: “We’re all with you, Lolo.”

Leicester also rallied behind the midfielder, writing: “Sending our best wishes to you, Rodrigo.”

Spurs will be back in action this weekend as they host Everton in North London. However, it’s unlikely that Bentancur will be available for the match.

The FA’s concussion guidelines recommend that a player should not return to play within 21 days of a head injury.

As of now, it’s still unclear whether the former Juventus star sustained a concussion during the match at the King Power Stadium.

If Bentancur is ruled out, one of Spurs’ summer signings could get the opportunity for a Premier League debut.

Both Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall came on as substitutes at the King Power Stadium and may be in contention for Postecoglou’s lineup
