Liverpool are closing in on a deal for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

This move would mark Arne Slot’s first major signing of his Anfield tenure.

However, the deal is not expected to be finalised until the summer of 2025, as Mamardashvili wants to secure regular game time before making the switch.

Romano’s report indicates that Liverpool’s pursuit of Mamardashvili is advancing to the final stages.

The Georgian goalkeeper would join Liverpool in June 2025, following the completion of his current contract with Valencia.

He posted on X: “Giorgi Mamardashvili’s move to Liverpool for June 2025 now getting close, advancing to final stages!

“Liverpool and Valencia in contact to agree on add-ons structure, package over €30m.

“Mamardashvili would stay at Valencia on loan one season — @Geo__team.”

Liverpool are negotiating with Valencia to agree on a transfer fee with an add-on structure, with the total package reportedly exceeding €30 million (£25.5 million).

Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to remain with Valencia for one more season, allowing him to gain valuable first-team experience before moving to Liverpool.

This timing coincides with Alisson Becker approaching his 33rd birthday, positioning Mamardashvili as a potential long-term successor.

This prospective signing raises questions about Caoimhin Kelleher’s future.

The Irish goalkeeper may find himself as the third-choice keeper next season if he stays beyond this transfer window.

Nonetheless, Mamardashvili’s impressive performances at EURO 2024, where he was hailed as ‘exceptional,’ suggest he could be a valuable addition to Liverpool’s squad.

Valencia manager Rubén Baraja earlier assured that Mamardashvili remains committed to the club despite ongoing speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool.

“It’s very simple,” he said.

“He’s our player, and as long as there is no other different situation, I’m not going to evaluate anything.

“He’s here, he’s ready to participate.

“We can’t talk about situations that haven’t happened yet.”

Liverpool are still awaiting their first signing of the summer transfer window after being turned down by Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

Ahead of Sociedad’s La Liga opener against Rayo Vallecano, manager Imanol Alguacil shared an emotional message for Zubimendi.

“He is the best signing of the summer,” Alguacil said of Zubimendi.

“We knew that, after the year he had, teams were going to come for him.

“Liverpool are a historic, very big team and, seeing all the money they wanted to put on the table, you have to value what it means for Martin to say ‘no’ and stay here.”
