Atletico Madrid confirm signing of Conor Gallagher from Chelsea

Conor Gallagher has joined Atletico Madrid on a long-term deal

Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Chelsea for a fee believed to be around £33 million.

The 24-year-old has agreed to a five-year contract with the Spanish club.

Gallagher ends an 18-year journey with Chelsea that began when he was just six years old.

From his early days in the club’s Academy to becoming a Premier League regular and an England international, his time at Chelsea has been marked by consistent success and growth.

During his Academy years, Gallagher achieved significant milestones, including two FA Youth Cup victories and two Under-18 Premier League titles, along with the Under-18 Premier League Cup.

His standout performances earned him the prestigious Chelsea Academy Player of the Year award at the end of the 2018/19 season.

He embarked on his first loan spell in the 2019/20 season, impressing first at Charlton Athletic and then at Swansea City, where he helped the Welsh side secure a spot in the Championship play-offs.

Gallagher continued his development with a season at West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League, followed by a successful loan at Crystal Palace.

His time at Palace saw him net eight goals across all competitions and earn the club’s Player of the Year honor for the 2021/22 season, as well as his first senior cap for England.

Gallagher’s impressive performances at Selhurst Park secured him a place in Chelsea’s senior squad for the 2022/23 campaign.

He made his first-team debut on the opening day against Everton and scored a memorable 90th-minute winner against Crystal Palace in October, a goal that would later be named Chelsea’s Goal of the Season.

Last season, the 24-year-old midfielder featured in 50 games for Chelsea.

In the absence of captain Reece James and vice-captain, Conor Gallagher often stepped up to wear the captain’s armband.

He also concluded the season as part of the England squad that reached the final of the European Championship in Germany.

A Europa League winner in 2019, Gallagher leaves Chelsea with 95 appearances and ten goals to his name.
