Arsenal are contemplating a late summer bid for Athletic Club winger Nico Williams and are prepared to activate his £48 million release clause.
According to The Independent, Arsenal are considering a move to secure Williams but face the challenge of convincing him to leave Spain.
Although the Gunners are ready to meet his release clause, Williams currently prefers to stay in Spain.
Williams, who has long harboured ambitions of joining Barcelona, turned down a move to the Catalan giants earlier this summer.
His determination to remain in Bilbao presents a significant obstacle for Arsenal.
The 22-year-old impressed during Euro 2024, scoring two goals in Germany, including one in the final against England.
His standout performances have drawn the attention of several top European clubs, including Barcelona, Chelsea, and Liverpool.
Recently, Williams was handed the No. 10 shirt by Athletic Club, further indicating his commitment to the team, despite his ongoing desire to eventually play for Barcelona.
Arsenal have faced frustration this summer, struggling to sign a new No. 9, which was Mikel Arteta’s top priority at the start of the window.
Alexander Isak was a target, but Newcastle was unwilling to negotiate.
If a deal for Williams cannot be struck before the transfer window closes next Friday, Arsenal may pivot to other targets.
One alternative could be Ademola Lookman of Atalanta.
If Arsenal cannot secure Williams, they might turn to Lookman, who has also been linked with a move to the Emirates.
Arsenal have already made one major signing this summer, bringing in Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for £42 million last month.
They are also on the verge of announcing Mikel Merino as their latest addition, having agreed on a £33 million deal with Real Sociedad.
