Liverpool are reportedly among several clubs considering a move for Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes this summer.

Nunes, who joined City in 2023, is said to be frustrated with his limited opportunities after making just nine Premier League starts last season.

The Portuguese international’s prospects for more playing time appear bleak with the return of Ilkay Gundogan, who rejoined City after a year at Barcelona.

Nunes could be offloaded before the transfer window closes next week.

According to a report from the Daily Star, via The Mirror, Liverpool and Chelsea have expressed interest in signing Nunes, while West Ham United and Everton are also in the race.

The 25-year-old has reportedly turned down a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, prioritising his career in the Premier League.

City manager Pep Guardiola is reportedly aware that he cannot guarantee Nunes a significant role this season, which could prompt the player to seek opportunities elsewhere.

This situation mirrors that of other City players like Julian Alvarez, Liam Delap, Kalvin Phillips, and Tommy Doyle, who have either left or are considering moves.

Guardiola recently hinted that Manchester City are unlikely to make any further signings before the transfer window closes next Friday, barring any unforeseen injuries.

He said: “I don’t know what’s going to happen, maybe something happens in terms of injuries, hopefully not, or the market provides something unexpected that financially suits or tactically.”

Liverpool have long been admirers of Matheus Nunes, having attempted to secure the midfielder’s signature in the summer of 2022 before his eventual move to Wolves.

The Reds renewed their interest in Nunes after the season, intent on bringing him to Anfield.

However, Wolves had since removed a release clause in his contract, which would have allowed Liverpool to sign the former Sporting star for a fee reportedly around £44 million.
