Liverpool have seen several young talents depart Anfield this month, and Tyler Morton could soon follow with the transfer window closing on Friday.
According to Paul Joyce of The Times, Bayer Leverkusen have submitted a loan offer for Morton, with Xabi Alonso eager to strengthen his midfield options by bringing in the 21-year-old.
Morton, who was given opportunities during pre-season under Arne Slot, now faces a challenging path to regular first-team football due to the depth in Liverpool’s midfield.
Realising his prospects are limited, the midfielder is reportedly “keen to continue his upward trajectory” and could find more playing time with the Bundesliga contenders.
Liverpool previously valued the young prospect at £20 million.
Now, they face a decision; to loan him out to Leverkusen for the 2024/25 season or keep him at Anfield.
His omission from Liverpool’s matchday squads for the opening two Premier League games suggests he’s currently further down the pecking order when Slot has a full squad at his disposal.
Liverpool have a history of sending young players to the Bundesliga, with mixed results.
Fabio Carvalho and Sepp van den Berg had contrasting loan spells at RB Leipzig and Mainz last season. Morton could follow that same path, hoping to benefit from the experience in Germany.
Morton earlier expressed his excitement about Arne Slot’s style of play at Liverpool and believes he is ready to compete for a first-team spot.
He impressed with two notable cameos off the bench during Liverpool’s ongoing US tour, which saw the Reds secure victories over Real Betis and Arsenal.
Morton, who spent the past two seasons on loan in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers and Hull City, is eager to break into the Liverpool senior squad for the upcoming campaign.
“He loves Total Football,” said Morton.
“He’s come in and it’s a style a lot of players love.
“If you don’t love the style he plays, you shouldn’t be a footballer really!
“It’s Total Football and it’s every midfielder’s dream.
“You could see it (against Arsenal) in the triangles that were played; he’s big on triangles.
“I thought it was brilliant, I thought we dominated and against a very good Arsenal side.
“It was a great display.
“The style the gaffer is implementing is working.
“You can see it’s starting to click already and that’s a big compliment to the management team.
“I think it’s going to improve quickly and I think it was a very good step in a good direction.”
Morton added: “I love learning new styles.
“I loved going out on loan and learning different styles from different managers and picking up little things that I can take into my career.
“I’m definitely picking up things here. It’s a very tough pre-season, very intense, you’ve got to work hard for everything.
“I think that’s what we’re doing, that’s what I’m doing especially.
“I’ve definitely picked up stuff I can take on into the season.”
