Liverpool’s promising youngster Calum Scanlon is poised to join Millwall on a season-long loan, according to The Athletic.
The 19-year-old left-back will continue his development with the Championship club as he aims to secure regular first-team football.
Scanlon, who made two appearances for Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp in the Europa League last season, joined Anfield from Birmingham City for approximately £500,000 in December 2020.
The England Under-19 international’s progress was recognised with a new long-term contract in April.
Millwall head coach Neil Harris has made it clear that he intends to strengthen his squad before the transfer deadline on Friday.
It appears that Scanlon could be the first of several new signings for the Lions in the coming days.
Cardiff City midfielder Ryan Wintle is also set to join Millwall on loan, adding depth to Harris’ options.
Scanlon, who regularly featured for Liverpool’s Under-21s in Premier League 2 last season, also made a few appearances for the first team.
The highly-rated young full-back was brought on from the bench twice by Klopp in the Europa League last term, playing against Toulouse at Anfield and Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium as Liverpool progressed to the knockout stages.
In addition to his Europa League appearances, Scanlon was on the bench in the Premier League against Brentford and Everton, as well as in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup matches against Southampton and Bournemouth.
He also scored for Liverpool’s Under-21s in their EFL Trophy match against Morecambe during the group stage.
Millwall have had a challenging start to the season, taking just one point from their first three Championship games and being eliminated from the Carabao Cup by League One side Leyton Orient.
They conceded seven goals in their opening two fixtures before drawing 0-0 with Hull City, highlighting the need for defensive reinforcements.
Joe Bryan is currently Millwall’s first-choice left-back, and while Murray Wallace can fill in if needed, he struggled in the Carabao Cup defeat to Leyton Orient.
Therefore, bringing in a new defender like Scanlon is a logical move.
Scanlon, who began playing as a left-back midway through his youth career, has acknowledged the need to improve his defensive skills.
His loan spell at Millwall will provide him with an opportunity to contribute both offensively and defensively.
Ultimately, Scanlon aims to secure a place in Liverpool’s first team.
A successful loan stint at The Den could enhance his chances of achieving that goal.
