Millwall have announced the season-long loan signing of Calum Scanlon from Liverpool.
The 19-year-old left-back becomes the ninth addition to Millwall’s squad during this summer’s transfer window.
Scanlon joined Liverpool from Birmingham City in February 2021 and has since developed into a promising young talent.
The England Under-19 international signed his first professional contract with Liverpool in March 2022 and made his senior debut in a Europa League match against Toulouse in October 2023.
In addition to his senior debut, Scanlon has featured twice for Liverpool’s Under-21s in the Football League Trophy, scoring in a 3-0 victory against Morecambe.
He is part of the same England youth setup as Romain Esse. Scanlon also secured a new extended contract with Liverpool in April 2024.
“We’re really pleased to get Calum Scanlon into the building,” said Steve Gallen, Millwall’s Director of Football.
“He is a young player and an England youth international who we have been tracking for a few months now.
“He is quick, dynamic and loves getting forward and will provide good competition in the defensive area.
“I’d like to thank Liverpool for their help throughout the process and I look forward to seeing Calum flourish at The Den.”
Scanlon, who regularly featured for Liverpool’s Under-21s in Premier League 2 last season, also made a few appearances for the first team.
The highly-rated young full-back was brought on from the bench twice by Klopp in the Europa League last term, playing against Toulouse at Anfield and Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium as Liverpool progressed to the knockout stages.
In addition to his Europa League appearances, Scanlon was on the bench in the Premier League against Brentford and Everton, as well as in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup matches against Southampton and Bournemouth.
He also scored for Liverpool’s Under-21s in their EFL Trophy match against Morecambe during the group stage.
Millwall have had a challenging start to the season, taking just one point from their first three Championship games and being eliminated from the Carabao Cup by League One side Leyton Orient.
They conceded seven goals in their opening two fixtures before drawing 0-0 with Hull City, highlighting the need for defensive reinforcements.
Joe Bryan is currently Millwall’s first-choice left-back, and while Murray Wallace can fill in if needed, he struggled in the Carabao Cup defeat to Leyton Orient.
Therefore, bringing in a new defender like Scanlon is a logical move.
Scanlon, who began playing as a left-back midway through his youth career, has acknowledged the need to improve his defensive skills.
His loan spell at Millwall will provide him with an opportunity to contribute both offensively and defensively.
Ultimately, Scanlon aims to secure a place in Liverpool’s first team.
