Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has downplayed the possibility of further transfers on deadline day but hasn’t ruled out taking advantage of any last-minute opportunities.
The Reds have already had a busy week in the transfer market, with sporting director Richard Hughes overseeing two key signings.
On Monday, Liverpool secured the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, although the goalkeeper will remain on loan at the Spanish club until next summer.
The club then swiftly followed up by acquiring Federico Chiesa from Juventus in a £12 million deal, finalized on Thursday.
While Mamardashvili will not join the squad until the 2024-25 season, Chiesa arrives immediately.
However, the Italian winger is unlikely to be included in the squad for Liverpool’s upcoming trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.
Speaking in his press conference ahead of the match with United, Slot said: “We’re happy with the ones we signed because, as I’ve said many times before, it’s difficult to make the team even stronger because we already have a very strong team.
“So if we find them, we’re very happy with that.
“Chiesa is someone who can help us in the short term and Marmadashvili is one of the examples of this club, what they’ve done in the past at well, they look at the future, long-term of the club.
“That’s why we signed him.
On deadline day incomings, the Dutchman added: “I’m not expecting anything but it’s not different to all the days before.
“If we see an opportunity, we could act. But I’m not expecting anything.”
“(And on potential outgoings) Same for incomings transfers or loans, if it’s the right opportunity for the player and us, we will act. But my main attention is on Man United and not on outgoings.”
Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili will stay at Valencia for the current season before making the move to Merseyside.
The 23-year-old arrives with a growing reputation, having impressed both at the Euros and in La Liga.
He is expected to provide long-term competition for Alisson Becker, who has received offers from Saudi Arabia.
Current second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher made a strong impression with 26 appearances for Liverpool last season and has attracted interest from Nottingham Forest during this transfer window.
Slot admitted that Kelleher’s future at the club is uncertain.
When asked if Kelleher might consider his future, the 45-year-old said: “Maybe. We have to make decisions as well, it’s not only the player.
“If you work at Liverpool you need competition. We need a lot of good players.
“Marmadashvili is someone for the long-term.
“I’m really happy with the goalkeepers we have at the moment. Caoimhe is one of them.
“We’re in a goods place with the goalkeepers we have for now and for the long-term.”
