Mikel Arteta has emphasized that “anything is possible” as Arsenal pursues a potential deadline-day deal for Raheem Sterling.
However, he declined to comment specifically on the Chelsea star.
He said: “Let’s see, it’s always possible. In the last 24 hours of the transfer window, never rule out anything.
“I cannot talk about a player of another team.”
Raheem Sterling has reportedly been offered to Arsenal, as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his squad with a wide attacking player before Friday’s deadline.
However, Arsenal’s recent strategy has been to avoid signing older players on substantial contracts.
Sterling is available for transfer, with Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca keen for the former England international to leave.
The 29-year-old has been sidelined at Chelsea, with Maresca removing him from first-team training. Sterling’s departure has been anticipated since he was omitted from the squad for Chelsea’s opening-day defeat to Manchester City.
Manchester United had been considered a potential destination, but discussions have stalled, making Arsenal the leading contender.
Sterling is reportedly eager to move, as Maresca has made it clear that the attacker does not have a future at Stamford Bridge.
Earlier this week, Maresca stated that Sterling needs to leave if he wants to play this season.
“I prefer to be honest with players,” he said.
“The ones who are not involved are not going to be involved and they won’t get any minutes if they stay.
“I don’t know what happens when the window closes if they are still here.
“History and numbers speak for Raheem. He knows exactly what he needs to do.
“They are not going to get minutes.
“I have been clear and honest with them. I can say that this is not a mad club.
“Since I joined the club we are working in one direction.
“There is a clear direction where the club wants to go.”
Arsenal have completed three signings this summer, securing Ricciardo Calafiori, David Raya, and Mikel Merino on permanent deals.
The Gunners are also anticipated to finalise a deadline-day loan move for Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto as a replacement for Aaron Ramsdale, who has been transferred to Southampton.
