Liverpool could be on the brink of a reunion with Joel Matip if recent transfer rumours prove accurate.
The former Reds centre-back departed Anfield earlier this summer when his contract expired, leaving the club as a free agent.
Matip joined Liverpool on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016 and spent eight successful years at Anfield.
During his time at the club, he formed a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk under manager Jurgen Klopp.
The 33-year-old made 201 appearances for Liverpool, securing six major trophies, including a Premier League title and a Champions League.
However, Matip’s last season at Liverpool was marred by an ACL injury sustained in December, which sidelined him for the remainder of the campaign.
Despite his rehabilitation, Matip chose not to sign a new contract, and he remains a free agent as he searches for a new club.
Recent reports suggest that Matip might be returning to the Premier League soon.
Sky Sports has indicated that West Ham United are exploring the free agent market for a new centre-back and have identified Matip as a potential target in the coming days or weeks.
In addition to Matip, West Ham are also considering John Egan, who left Sheffield United this summer.
The Hammers currently have Konstantinos Mavropanos, Jean-Clair Todibo, and Max Kilman as their centre-back options.
Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd left the London Stadium on loan during the summer transfer window.
If Matip were to join West Ham, he would have the opportunity to face his former club Liverpool shortly after his departure.
The Reds are set to play against the Hammers in the third round of the Carabao Cup at Anfield, with the match scheduled for the week commencing September 23.
