Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel expressed sympathy for his former manager, Sir Alex Ferguson after the Red Devils suffered a comprehensive defeat against Liverpool.
Arne Slot’s Liverpool secured a commanding 3-0 victory at Old Trafford on Sunday, with a first-half brace from Luis Diaz and a second-half goal from Mo Salah, marking his 10th goal at Old Trafford.
The defeat leaves Manchester United with two losses in their first three matches of the season, increasing the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag following the club’s decision to retain him over the summer.
In contrast, Slot’s tenure at Liverpool has begun in remarkable fashion.
The Dutchman, who replaced Jurgen Klopp, has won all three of his Premier League matches so far without conceding a single goal.
Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel sat alongside Ferguson in the Old Trafford stands during the match and remarked that the team’s performance and result were not reflective of the legacy built by the 13-time Premier League-winning manager.
“I was sat with Sir Alex today, it was really sad,” the Dane told Premier League Productions.
“What he did for this football club. Everything that we enjoyed.
“The great times. Everything.
“To sit with him and he is watching this.
“That, for me, is really, really sad that he is watching that.
“He did something really extraordinary with this football club.
“All of that is not there anymore.”
Fellow Premier League Productions pundits Michael Owen and Paul Scholes believe the result highlights how quickly Slot has adapted at Liverpool and back the Reds to challenge for the title this season.
“There was hardly any outgoings, it was a structured squad and he was walking into a squad that has a lot of players at the peak of their powers,” said Owen.
“There were questions about Liverpool but after three games you think “wow” it is going to take a special team to stop them.
“They have just swatted United aside.”
“They could really challenge for that title this year,” Scholes added.
“Before a ball had been kicked I thought it was going to be Arsenal’s year to give City a real go and possibly go on to win it.
“But after watching the first three games, I think Liverpool could go past Arsenal.”
