Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez accused of ‘betrayal’ after photo surfaces days following Liverpool loss
Lisandro Martinez played the full 90 minutes as Manchester United lost 3-0 to Liverpool
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has faced backlash from supporters after sharing a photo of himself smiling alongside Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister – just days after United suffered a 3-0 defeat to their arch-rivals at Old Trafford.
Martinez, who played the entire match during United’s second consecutive loss to Liverpool, watched as Luis Diaz scored twice before Mohamed Salah added a third, sealing a comprehensive victory for the visitors.
Following the match, United players departed for international duty, with Martinez returning to Argentina for World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia.
He took to Instagram to announce he was “at home.”
However, the second image in his post sparked outrage among fans.
The picture showed Martinez grinning alongside his Argentina teammate Mac Allister, who had played for Liverpool in the recent fixture at Old Trafford.
Supporters were shocked and disappointed that Lisandro Martinez appeared unaware of the implications of sharing a friendly photo with a player from a team that had just dealt United a heavy defeat.
One replied: “What’s this guy doing? The whole Manchester United fans and owners are fuming and you have the audacity to do this? Do you even have sense?”
Another said: “The guy just beat us 3-0 bro don’t be uploading a pic with him the very next day,’ while a third reply added: “Licha I love you to bits, but this is not it man!”
“Feels like a betrayal,” wrote one fan, while another said: “I love you Lisandro but how on earth are you smiling and hugging the Liverpool player that beat us 3 days ago.
“I am still fuming and wasn’t even in Manchester.”
The fallout from Manchester United’s defeat has continued to unfold, with Alejandro Garnacho responding to a fan who criticized his performance against Liverpool.
Manager Erik ten Hag has also faced significant criticism and found himself defending his tactics during a tense exchange with a journalist after the match.
When asked if he was certain the players were the issue and not his coaching, the Dutchman firmly responded: “I don’t think otherwise we would win trophies as we did and to beat big opponents so I am sorry for you.”
Manchester United have just over 10 days to recover from their defeat to Liverpool before they face newly-promoted Southampton.
Following that match, they will host Barnsley in the Carabao Cup third round.
