Steve McManaman believes Liverpool have initiated contract negotiations with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk now that the transfer window has closed.
All three players are in the final year of their contracts at Anfield.
Much speculation has surrounded the futures of Liverpool’s captain, vice-captain, and key forward.
As it stands, they will be free to negotiate pre-contract agreements with overseas clubs starting January 1.
Salah, who has scored three goals in as many games this season, has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League after Al-Ittihad’s £150m bid for him was rejected last summer.
Alexander-Arnold has been targeted by Real Madrid for the past 18 months and prefers to keep discussions about his future private.
On the eve of the new Premier League season last month, Van Dijk, whose last contract extension was in 2021, acknowledged that there had been “no change” in his situation during the summer as he entered the final 12 months of his deal.
McManaman, who joined Real Madrid on a Bosman transfer in 1999 after leaving Liverpool, believes the club’s focus will now shift to securing the futures of these key players.
Speaking to ESPN, McManaman said: “You hope the three deals will be done and I know Liverpool are talking to them already about these contracts now the transfer window is out the way.”
Providing an update on his future on his future after Sunday’s win over Manchester United, Salah said: “Honestly, I had a good summer.
“I had a long time to stay with myself, try to think positively because as you know it’s my last year at the club.
“I just want to enjoy it, I don’t want to think about it but I feel free to play football, we will see next year.”
