Manchester United announce Europa League squad as Garnacho and Mainoo miss out

Manchester United will commence their Europa League campaign later this month

Manchester United have included Casemiro in their squad for the upcoming Europa League campaign, despite ongoing speculation about his future.

The midfielder’s status has been uncertain since United completed their deadline-day signing of Manuel Ugarte, with reports linking him to Turkish Super Lig clubs.

Turkish teams have until September 13 to finalize new signings, just days before United’s Europa League opener against Erik ten Hag’s former club, FC Twente.

In addition to Casemiro, Ten Hag has also included Christian Eriksen in the squad.

Eriksen’s agent recently confirmed that the Danish midfielder turned down offers from outside Europe and will remain with United for the time being.

The squad also features two players who have been out of the first-team picture but were signed during Ten Hag’s tenure.

Tyrell Malacia, who missed last season due to injury, is now available for European competition.

Young left-back Harry Amass, who joined from Watford in 2023, is also included.

Notably, all of United’s significant senior summer signings are part of the squad, meaning Leny Yoro will be available once he recovers from the foot injury that sidelined him at the start of the Premier League season.

United have named a 25-man squad for the Europa League, which can be supplemented by a ‘B’ list of academy players, including recent debutant Toby Collyer.

However, Amass, who came through Watford’s academy, needed to be registered in the main squad.

“A player may be registered on List B if he is born on or after 1 January 2003 and has, since his 15th birthday, been eligible to play for the club concerned for any uninterrupted period of two years, or a total of three consecutive years with a maximum of one loan period to a club from the same association for a period not longer than one year,” UEFA’s rules read.

“Players aged 16 may be registered on List B if they have been registered with the participating club for the previous two years without interruption.”

In Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge, United reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League but were eliminated by eventual champions Sevilla.

Last season, they competed in the Champions League but finished at the bottom of their group, which included Bayern Munich, FC Copenhagen, and Galatasaray.

This season marks the debut of the Europa League’s new ‘Swiss-style’ format, which replaces the traditional group stage with a league phase.

United will have home matches against Twente, PAOK, Bodo/Glimt, and Rangers, and will travel to face Porto, Fenerbahce, Viktoria Plzen, and FCSB.
