Liverpool have appointed Diogo Paiva as the club’s new technical skills coach, where he will work with both the first team and the academy.
The appointment, first reported by Lewis Bower on X, marks the latest move in Liverpool’s summer overhaul.
Paiva joins the Reds from Porto and will bring his expertise as a technical skills coach.
The 38-year-old has previously collaborated with fellow Portuguese Vitor Matos.
Matos, who served as an Elite Development Coach, was a key member of Jurgen Klopp’s backroom staff.
He has since moved to Red Bull Salzburg to work alongside Pep Lijnders and Andreas Kornmayer.
Paiva’s previous roles include working with Matos at Shandong Luneng in China and at Porto before Matos’s move to Merseyside in 2019.
Born in Porto, Paiva started his career with the youngest Portuguese-based youth teams at AC Milan, followed by a year as technical director in the Monaco academy.
After a brief spell as assistant coach at Portuguese lower-league club SC Espinho, he focused on talent development and moved to China in 2016.
In China, he served as head of individual player development at Shandong Taishan for two years.
Upon returning to Portugal, he continued in the same role at Porto for six years.
In 2022, he also took on the role of Porto’s U19 assistant coach, which he held until his recent switch to Liverpool.
Lijnders, like Matos, also has a strong connection with Porto.
The Dutch coach spent six years at the club, progressing from the under-19s to the B team, and eventually to the first team as a technical coach.
Paiva’s connection to his hometown club was evident when he posted on LinkedIn upon his departure.
“It was a pleasure to work with such special people, including players, who helped me grow as a coach!
“It was an honour and a privilege to wear the shirt with this symbol on the chest and lead the Individual Development Project.
“I’m sure the club will continue to grow and develop players.
“I wish everyone at the club much success!
“I will always be grateful to those who trusted me with this opportunity to create something pioneering at the club in terms of player development!
“Countless players reached our 1st Team and winning the UEFA Youth League will be remembered. Representing this club is something indescribable!
“See you forever, FC Porto.”
