Virgil van Dijk has emphasized his desire to remain “the big leader” for both Liverpool and the Netherlands “for the next two years.”
Last season, Van Dijk reaffirmed his status as one of Europe’s top defenders, and now he has expressed his ambition to maintain that level until at least the 2026 World Cup.
Speaking to the media during his international duty with the Netherlands, the captain stated: “At both teams, I am still Virgil van Dijk, the big leader, and I certainly want to remain that for the next two years.”
“It was a very long and intense season last year, including the Euros,” the centre-back added.
“I focus on the team and the boys so much. I always try to talk and am constantly busy with everyone.
“I’ve had that responsibility for years.
“As captain, it’s the team first and then yourself but it should not be at the expense of your own performance.
“In my opinion, I have always managed that very well.”
Van Dijk has been in fine form for Liverpool who have kept three consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League so far,
He continued: “I am very much important, on and off the pitch.
“I don’t like to say that about myself, but I am.
“The responsibility at the club and at the national team is still super big.”
The Liverpool captain earned his 75th international cap as the Netherlands defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 5-2 on Saturday night.
Van Dijk, who also serves as captain of the Dutch national team, made his first appearance since the Netherlands’ heartbreaking last-minute loss to England in the Euro 2024 semi-finals in July.
Following their elimination, the 33-year-old, whose contract with Liverpool expires next summer, had hinted at considering his future with both club and country during an emotional post-match interview.
