AEK Athens are closing in on Chelsea forward David Datro Fofana after impressing on loan at Burnley last season, according to The Independent.
The move will initially be on loan, with the Greek club holding an option to make the transfer permanent for £20 million next summer.
The deal is pending the finalization of paperwork between the two clubs.
While the transfer window has closed in England, Greek clubs can continue signing players until Wednesday, giving Chelsea the opportunity to further trim their squad amid internal unrest between owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake.
Chelsea acquired Fofana from Norwegian club Molde for £8.4 million in 2023.
However, after just four appearances for Chelsea without a goal, the club is now looking to part ways with the Ivory Coast forward.
Should Fofana perform well this season, Chelsea could potentially secure a profit from the deal.
Fofana had two loan spells last season.
First with Bundesliga side Union Berlin, where he scored twice in 17 games, and then with the Clarets, where he netted four times in 15 matches.
Chelsea have been actively balancing their squad in recent weeks, with several players, including Raheem Sterling, Conor Gallagher, Tino Anjorin, Armando Broja, Trevoh Chalobah, and Djorde Petrovic, departing the club.
Ian Maatsen, Lewis Hall, Romelu Lukaku, Omari Hutchinson, and Angelo also left this summer, aiding Chelsea’s efforts to align with Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Following a promising Premier League victory at Wolves, Chelsea were held to a draw at home by Crystal Palace. Enzo Maresca’s side will travel to Bournemouth this weekend after the international break.
