Liverpool have been handed a huge injury blow after Harvey Elliott sustained a fractured foot during the international break and is expected to be out for at least a month.

Elliott experienced discomfort while training with England’s Under-21s last week and subsequently underwent further assessments upon his early return to Merseyside.

The injury comes at a challenging time for Liverpool, as they face a busy schedule.

The club hopes the setback isn’t too severe, with Elliott targeting a return for the first match following the next international break.

Liverpool are set to host Chelsea on October 20, following the Nations League fixtures.

This injury is particularly untimely as Elliott was expected to play a more prominent role in the coming weeks, with the Champions League campaign starting and Liverpool beginning their Carabao Cup defense against West Ham United later this month.

Arne Slot had planned to utilize Elliott in a revised role, likely as an attacking central midfielder rather than a wide player.

Harvey Elliott impressed Slot during pre-season but has so far been limited to substitute appearances during the Dutch manager’s perfect start to his Liverpool tenure.

This setback comes at a critical time for new Liverpool boss Slot, as Elliott will miss the next block of seven matches before the upcoming international break and possibly beyond.

Liverpool will face Nottingham Forest at Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday, followed by their Champions League opener away at AC Milan.

Bournemouth will then visit Merseyside before Liverpool begin their Carabao Cup defence against West Ham at home.

Following that, they have Premier League fixtures against Wolves and Crystal Palace, with a Champions League match at home to Bologna sandwiched in between.

On the positive side, new signing Federico Chiesa has spent the past two weeks working on his fitness and will be vying for a spot in the squad to face Nottingham Forest at Anfield this weekend.
