Ben Chilwell set to start training with Chelsea first team again

Ben Chilwell is yet to make an appearance for Chelsea this season

Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell is set to resume training with the first team after failing to secure a move away from the club before the transfer deadline.

The 27-year-old was among several Chelsea players who were initially isolated from the first team.

However, unlike others such as Raheem Sterling, Romelu Lukaku, and Trevoh Chalobah, Chilwell remains at Stamford Bridge.

Premier League clubs are required to submit a squad of up to 25 players over the age of 21 by Saturday.

Enzo Maresca has not yet confirmed whether Chilwell will be included in that squad.

Chilwell has already been excluded from Chelsea’s Europa Conference League squad.

“We will sit with him and find solutions,” said Maresca, who only took over this summer.

“The reason why he was training apart is because the idea was for him to leave.

“We didn’t find solutions and he is here.

“He is probably going to start training with us.

“I saw him this morning and he’s OK.”

Ben Chilwell, who joined Chelsea for £45 million from Leicester City in 2020, last featured in the team’s 2-0 FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester City at Wembley on April 20.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s co-owners, Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, are considering buying each other out due to a disagreement at the board level.

Boehly and Eghbali played key roles in the 2022 takeover of Chelsea, which occurred following Roman Abramovich’s forced sale of the club due to sanctions imposed on him by the UK government.

“If I spend my energy on something different then it’s not worth it, my focus is on tomorrow’s game [against Bournemouth],” said Maresca.

“The other things are things I cannot control.

“I spoke with Todd when we played Manchester City and Behdad just days ago.

“I’m speaking with both, there’s no problems at all. I’m focused on the pitch.”

He added: “The players are professional to understand that these things are things we can’t control so the focus is the pitch, the way we need to improve.”
