Manchester United handed double injury boost ahead of Barnsley clash
Manchester United will take on Barnsley in the League Cup third-round
Manchester United have no new injury concerns ahead of their League Cup third-round tie against Barnsley.
Noussair Mazraoui was forced off during the closing stages of United’s 3-0 Premier League victory over Southampton on Saturday, and Matthijs de Ligt also came off with a cramp.
However, the pair are expected to be available for selection at Old Trafford.
Luke Shaw (calf), Leny Yoro (foot), Victor Lindelof (toe), Mason Mount (muscular), Rasmus Højlund (hamstring), and Tyrell Malacia (knee) remain sidelined.
Manuel Ugarte is likely to make his full debut in the match.
“They are all available. They are good,” United manager Erik ten Hag clarified when asked about Mazraoui and De Ligt.
“Luke Shaw: he’s progressing but not yet ready to be selected and Ugarte you will see tomorrow what the selection will be for this game.
“They (Hojlund, Lindelof and Mount) are not ready for tomorrow.
“We will see, our progress will continue.”
Ten Hag is expected to make changes for United’s first cup game of the season, with their opening Europa League match against Twente scheduled for next Wednesday, following their trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
“Absolutely,” Ten Hag said of rotation.
“Very important and I hope I have headaches because last year I also had headaches but there were no players available.
“I hope I I have many players available and we can make a selection from game to game.
“Definitely, we have to rotate because we have to cover so many games.
“It’s not only about the starting XI.
“It is a nice headache.”
“I would say it’s significant, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, they’re significant,” Ten Hag added.
“I see the attention from all the teams, from all the owners, from all the managers, when they win the trophy like Liverpool last year in the Carabao Cup.
“And I saw that final and not only going up to the final, I see all the teams battling for it, we want the same.
“It’s very important in football to win trophies and in English football it’s very important.
“You have five leagues (competitions), five opportunities and our aim is to win all the games, so win all the trophies if possible.
“It’s about winning trophies but I don’t talk only about this, you guys are talking about [it].
“You have to win, to win leagues, we are in five leagues and we want to win them.
“So no doubt we are aiming for a trophy and this is one opportunity, so we take it seriously.”
