Cody Gakpo believes he seized his opportunity after helping Liverpool begin their Champions League campaign with a bang at AC Milan.
Gakpo impressed in his first start of the season as the Reds came from behind to secure a 3-1 victory at the San Siro on Tuesday evening.
The Dutchman, stepping in for the benched Luis Diaz on the left flank, provided a crucial assist for Dominik Szoboszlai.
Earlier, first-half headers from centre-backs Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk had canceled out Christian Pulisic’s early opener.
The win marked a strong response to Liverpool’s shock Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, as they made a triumphant return to a revamped Champions League after missing out last season.
Cody Gakpo said: “Obviously, every player wants to play and I got my moment.
“Every player feels the need to take that moment, and I really wanted to show myself.
“I’m very happy with myself but especially the win.”
Of the victory, the Holland international added to Amazon Prime: “It’s important.
“After the last game in the league we lost, we needed a reaction and that’s what we did.
“It’s a good start to the Champions League campaign and we’re very happy.
“We had more chances but they were dangerous in moments as well.
“Overall we controlled the game pretty good and it’s a fair result.
“It was key that we remained calm and stayed focused, that’s what we did.
“We have to thank our centre-backs for the two great headers and form then on we controlled the game better.
“We work on set-pieces before every game and we’re very happy it worked out.”
