Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that captain Martin Odegaard has sustained a “significant” ankle injury during international duty.
This news is a major blow for both Odegaard and Arsenal’s ambitions this season.
Martin Odegaard, who plays a pivotal role in the team, is crucial to Arsenal’s hopes of winning silverware.
Without him, Arteta’s side will be left with a significant gap to fill in midfield.
The Norwegian star was instrumental last season, contributing 11 goals and as many assists, making him one of the most influential players in the squad.
Replacing Odegaard’s creativity and vision on the pitch will be a daunting task.
His ability to unlock defences has been key to Arsenal’s attacking prowess, and without him, they could face serious challenges in breaking down opponents.
Arteta told reporters on Wednesday: “After recent scans the scans showed that he’s [Odegaard] got some damage especially on one of the ligaments in the ankle.
“It’s something quite significant so we’re going to lose him for a while.”
Arteta added: “He’s our captain.
“He’s been one of the biggest and best players in our team.
“Our identity is very linked to how he plays and behaves.
“It’s a big test for the team to see how able we are to show a different face.”
“If we want to be at the level we want to be we have to be really good on the road and at home.
“We have to continue to be very consistent.
“In Europe, it’s very tough to win just like in the Premier League. Hopefully we can be better.
“You don’t know the opponents that well and then boxes become crucial.
“There are small moments that define the games. In Europe you’d better be at your best.”
The timing of the injury couldn’t be worse, with Arsenal facing a critical week.
They are set to play Europa League holders Atalanta in their Champions League opener on Thursday, followed by a crucial Premier League clash against title rivals Manchester City on Sunday.
Defeats in these matches could seriously dent their momentum.
