Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has shared that he misses the thrill of being a manager in a rare interview, 11 years after stepping away from the Old Trafford dugout.

The 82-year-old remains the most successful manager in Manchester United’s history, having claimed 13 Premier League titles and 38 trophies overall, including two Champions League victories.

Ferguson’s incredible legacy saw him nurture some of football’s biggest stars during his tenure.

However, since his departure, the club has struggled to replicate the Scot’s unparalleled success, with multiple managers, including David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, failing to restore United to their former glory.

Though retired, Sir Alex is still a familiar face on United matchdays and remains in close contact with Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff and players.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Ferguson reflected on life after retirement and shared his thoughts on what it’s like to be away from the touchline.

“Yeah, I miss it sometimes,” he said.

“I think the first year after retirement, I went to the European final and I said to Cathy ‘this is what I miss’ – big games, the European games.

“So then I went to most of the European finals because I find something I can relate to, something I would liked to have done every day.

“Because these are the big events that United should always be involved in.”

In 2018, Sir Alex Ferguson suffered a brain haemorrhage and underwent emergency surgery.

He previously spoke about how he was “terrified” that he might never speak again or face memory issues.

Speaking to the BBC in promotion of National Playlist Day – a campaign that highlights the use of music playlists to aid those suffering from dementia – Sir Alex also shared the activities he engages in to stay mentally and physically active.

“Fortunately my memory is quite good, pray the lord and touch wood it will stay that way,” he added.

‘I read a lot, I do quizzes, and I think that helps, there is the YouTube quizzes with 100 questions and if I don’t get 70 per cent I’m struggling.”
