Luke Shaw’s anticipated return to Manchester United may now be postponed until after the October international break.

The left-back has been sidelined since February 18 due to a calf injury he sustained during his first week back in pre-season training.

Initially, manager Erik ten Hag indicated that Shaw would likely be fit to return following the September internationals.

However, Ten Hag has now suggested that it is increasingly likely Shaw will not be available until mid-October.

“I think it’s probably, but I can’t say it’s 100 per cent sure,” Ten Hag replied when asked if Shaw would be back next month.

“The plan is just be back before but, as I say I can’t say this for 100 per cent for sure it can be short after the break.”

Manchester United will field the same squad that drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace on Saturday for their opening Europa League match against Twente.

Victor Lindelöf has returned to training following a toe injury, while Tyrell Malacia is gradually being reintegrated into team sessions after recovering from a long-term knee issue.

However, neither player will be available for selection in this match.

Meanwhile, Leny Yoro is continuing his rehabilitation from a metatarsal fracture.

The 18-year-old is not expected to return until late October or early November.

In the new Europa League format, United will play a total of eight matches and could finish as low as 24th in the 36-team league table yet still remain in contention in the competition.

Last season, manager Erik ten Hag led United to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, but they were eliminated by Sevilla, losing 5-2 on aggregate.

United previously lost the final to Villarreal in 2021 and were defeated by Sevilla in the semi-finals the year before.

“It’s an opportunity,” Ten Hag added.

“There are more roads to achieve the targets you want and this is definitely also a road. It’s the most difficult, probably.

“In a tournament of 32 you have to be the best but it’s a target, it’s a road we want to go.”
