Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has expressed his belief that Liverpool can challenge for the Premier League title this season.
Following the departure of Jurgen Klopp, there were questions about whether new manager Arne Slot would achieve immediate success.
However, the Dutchman has made a strong start to his tenure.
Slot’s Liverpool won their first three Premier League matches without conceding a goal, including an impressive 3-0 victory over rivals Manchester United.
However, doubts arose regarding their title credentials when Callum Hudson-Odoi’s goal secured a win for Nottingham Forest at Anfield.
Despite this setback, Liverpool rebounded with a commanding 3-0 win over Bournemouth last Saturday.
While the strong performances of Arsenal and Manchester City position them as favorites for the title, Scholes remains confident that the Reds will be in serious contention for the crown come May.
“I think Liverpool might have something to say about the title race this year,” Paul Scholes said on The Overlap Fan Debate, sponsored by Sky Bet (via The Mirror).
“When I look at their forward players, I think they have five or six good players.”
“I see their squad, the five or six midfield players who can all run and are great athletes with quality,” he added.
“You then look at the forwards, and they can all play.
“The only worry was the Forest game, that threw me.”
“Seeing Liverpool first-hand, what a squad of players, I see very little weaknesses,” Scholes continued.
“The only one we thought about was possibly if Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konate got injured in the centre half position.”
Arne Slot has kept his expectations for Liverpool’s title challenge close to his chest but has previously articulated his ambitions for his first season in charge.
“You always have to see the qualities of them [title rivals],” said the Dutchman.
“We know the qualities of them but where they are at the moment, how they improve and if they improve and the same for us.
“Every season brings in new challenges for everyone. It is too early to say where are we, if we are up there, above them or beneath them.
“That question can be answered in the best possible way after five, six, seven or eight games.
“Where we know where we are and where the other teams are.
“It is clear what our aim is – our or aim to close the gap and not to make it any bigger than it was in the last two years.”
