Premier League set for major change in transfer deadline
Premier League clubs voted to push deadline day back to the end of August after only two seasons
The Premier League is poised for a significant change in its transfer deadline following a unanimous vote by the 20 clubs regarding next summer’s window.
According to The Times, the clubs have agreed to move the transfer deadline to before the start of the season, with a proposed date of August 15.
The 2025/26 campaign is likely to kick off on the weekend of August 16/17, meaning clubs will need to finalise their transfers before then.
If ratified, this decision will mark the first time since the 2019/20 season that the transfer window closes before the domestic campaign begins.
Interestingly, clubs previously voted to extend the deadline to the end of August after just two seasons.
Now, five years later, they are set to revert to an earlier closure.
This change aligns the Premier League with other top European leagues, including those in Germany, Spain, Italy, and France, and has the backing of the European Club Association.
Critics argue that an earlier deadline may leave clubs vulnerable to losing players who could be tempted by late offers, particularly with the Saudi Pro League window closing in September.
However, this concern may be overstated, as the current system has seen minimal issues regarding player departures for the Middle East after the Premier League’s deadline.
In fact, many clubs view the later transfer windows in countries like Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Greece, and Belgium as an opportunity to offload players who they have struggled to sell.
For instance, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League over the summer but opted to remain at Anfield despite the lucrative offer.
