Erik ten Hag’s position as Manchester United manager is under scrutiny following the team’s humbling defeat at home to Tottenham on Sunday, despite him having signed a one-year extension in the summer.

The Dutchman will be given the upcoming matches against Porto and Aston Villa to prove his worth at Old Trafford, as it would cost the club £17.5m ($23.4m) to terminate his contract, according to GOAL.

If Ten Hag had been dismissed this past summer, he would have been owed around £10m ($13.4m).

The Red Devils have managed to secure only seven points from their first six Premier League matches this season, leaving them trailing behind the league’s top teams.

This slow start marks one of Manchester United’s worst beginnings to a season in recent years, and it’s no surprise that fans are starting to turn against their head coach.

During his tenure, Ten Hag has faced some harsh defeats, including a 7-0 loss to Liverpool in 2023.

Despite spending nearly £200m ($267m) this summer, the team appears to have taken a step backward since their FA Cup triumph in May.

Time is of the essence for Erik Ten Hag as he prepares for what could be the most critical week of his managerial career.

After the defeat to Spurs, Ten Hag stated that he does not fear being sacked.

“No, I am not thinking about this. We all made this decision to stay together, as an ownership, as a leadership group in the summer,” Erik Ten Hag said.

“Also we made the decision from a clear review what we have to improve as an organisation and how we want to construct a squad.

“But we knew it will take some time because of how the [summer transfer] window went, some players late in like [Manuel] Ugarte.

“Also we have to make some improvement in organisation, we still have some injuries, we need some time.

“We are all on one page or in one boat together – the ownership, the leadership group, the staff and the players as well. I don’t have that concern.”

The Red Devils will visit Porto on Thursday before facing Aston Villa at Villa Park in the Premier League on Sunday.
